Toronto Brewery Rankings and Tiers

Toronto is a HUGE city. Like, one-of-the-biggest-cities-in-North-America huge. The breweries are spread out like most cities, clustering together. But because of the size and population, traveling between clusters and even going between breweries within a cluster can be time consuming. So, I’d recommend visitors split by these regions, doing one (or maybe two) regions per day. There seems to be an “East End”, “West End”, and some in-betweens. I’m told the best Toronto area breweries are outside the city, but it would’ve been too time consuming to go so far from the city center. Maybe for those who are here more frequently or for longer than me, you can make it work. I’m sure someone will tell me how to get it done, but for BrewsTravellers who only have a few days, places like Third Moon aren’t viable. Interesting themes I noticed.

  • Great service most places
  • Mix of half-pours and flight-availability
  • Few places serving darker beers (I know it’s summer, but still…)
  • Not many I’d consider “sports friendly” – i.e. TVs for game watching
  • Pretty good distances between breweries – a lot of Ubers and Lyfts (it reminded me a little of Dallas/Fort worth in that way)

The breweries themselves in Toronto were good; most of them being Tier 2 and Tier 3 with a few Tier 4 and a lone Tier 5. Reminder…Tier 4 is Solid, Tier 3 is Good, and Tier 2 is Great. So no insults intended here. Other breweries suggested but I didn’t get to, will be in a list at the bottom. IMPERFECT LIST FOLKS!

Enough talk. Lets’ Rank and Tier!

Tier 1 – Elite Breweries

NONE

Tier 2 – Great Breweries

#1a – Godspeed

Excellent classic Czech beers with a Japanese flair and…German food? Interesting mix but it works. If you want excellent execution of classic beers, make the trip.

#1b – Halo

Fun flavors with a good selection of styles in a small, but nice taproom. Doesn’t hurt having a friendly and helpful bartender.

#1c – Rorschach

Brewery that likes to experiment and has a wide variety of offerings. Vibe is cool looking like an old house. Definitely worth going.

#4a – Collective Arts

One of the best breweries I’ve been to. Huge menu with great beers. Interesting layout and good location.

#4b – Blood Brothers

Strong reputation for a reason. Big menu with good beers, good food and a lot of outdoor space.

#6 – Bellwoods

A brewery with a strong reputation, good beers, but would not recommend going to the brewery. Maybe try the taproom instead?

Tier 3 – Good Breweries

#7a – Amsterdam Brewhouse

Amazing location and sweet layout with plenty of seating on the water. Good service and decent beer make this an unexpectedly good option.

#7b – Avling

More a farm-to-table restaurant than a brewery but still making good beers. Great concept to have a garden on the roof and using those ingredients in the food and beer.

#7c – Black Lab

A very solid brewery experience. It doesn’t have a defining attribute but everything about it was good.

#10 – Saulter Street

Alleyway brewery with some solid beers but a smaller selection. Good size space with some character.

Tier 4 – Solid Breweries

#11a – Eastbound

Decent beers in a pretty good location with great service. Worth a quick stop as an entry point into the East Side.

#11b – Left Field

A brewery with a fun theme and good energy. Beers are solid too, but the service was great.

#13 – Great Lakes Brewing Co Taproom

A multi-city brewery that keeps good quality despite mass production. Nothing extremely interesting but good location and solid all around.

#14 – Burdock

A brewery that feels more like a nicer restaurant. Beers were good but menu was limited.

Tier 5 – Fine Breweries

#15 – Steam Whistle

An iconic brand in an amazing location. The beer is what it is, so come for the trains and enjoy the downtown scenery
